Three Compelling Reasons for Women to Train BJJ

Unleashing Strength: The Rise of Women in BJJ at Lineage BJJ

As we continue to expand and welcome new members at Lineage BJJ, we are thrilled to witness the growing numbers and strength of women in our community. While women still represent a smaller percentage of BJJ athletes worldwide, their numbers are rapidly increasing year by year – and for good reason.

Our years of experience have consistently shown us that learning BJJ is beneficial for anyone seeking reliable self-defense skills, a challenging workout, and a supportive community. Women who join our academy often describe an incredibly cohesive experience and become some of our most dedicated and enthusiastic students.

BJJ transcends the barriers of size, strength, and natural athletic ability by placing a strong emphasis on technique. This means that individuals of all ages and backgrounds can find success and fulfillment on our mats.

If you're considering joining us for a trial, we encourage you to take a chance and give it a try. With time and effort, you'll witness the transformation of your mental and physical attributes into unique abilities on the mat, gaining strength and confidence along the way.

Empowering Generations: Another Mother-Daughter Duo Thriving in Jiu-Jitsu at Lineage BJJ

If you're considering joining the ranks of empowered women in BJJ, we've got three compelling reasons to motivate you through the door.

Self-Defense

We want to help the women and girls in our community feel safe, aware, and in control of their surroundings, and we think BJJ is the best avenue to get there. Aside from the physical training and enjoyment you’ll find on the mats, we’ll also teach anti-bullying, awareness, and technique variations that are suited more to self-defense, rather than the sport of BJJ.

Lineage is a great place to safely practice setting strict physical and psychological boundaries. We create a secure environment that invites you to willingly get a little bit uncomfortable, so you can practice thinking calmly in all types of scenarios. (Don’t worry – we also meet our new students where they are and don’t push too far too soon.)

Developing strategic thinking, calm and muscle memory is the best training for the unknown is worth your time, whether you’re five years old or 50, off to college or kindergarten.

Cricket, who began training BJJ in Winter 2019, came to us with self-defense as her main focus.

“I began training jiu-jitsu to feel more comfortable and safe living in a big city with my daughter,” said Cricket. “I wanted to know that if something dangerous were to happen while my husband was away, I would have some knowledge as to how I could protect her or myself. I would encourage any woman to join jiu-jitsu most importantly to learn how to protect themselves and their children.

You Can Make It Your Own

We strongly believe in making every person’s BJJ journey their own, and we take pride in our instructors’ abilities to work with individuals to find variations that work for their bodies. Reach, flexibility, leverage and above all, cool, level thinking can be just as beneficial as brute strength.

Oftentimes, we teach several variations on technique so it works with unique body types. As time passes, students learn what works for them and their game begins to grow exponentially. Time on the mats also lends an overall understanding of your body, which makes it easier to learn down the line.

If you come to us with an open mind, we’ll help you make it your own, and you’ll benefit for years to come.

Hillary, who coaches our kids’ classes at Lineage BJJ and has been training with us since 2017, said she especially appreciates the diversity of knowledge available to her.

The thing I like most about training is the practical knowledge of defensive techniques

taught by the instructors that can be utilized by anyone,” said Hillary” “Also the people; everyone I’ve met on the mat has been kind and willing to help. I feel more confident not just in jiu-jitsu but in other parts of my life. I love to learn and compete with myself to see how far I have come and where I can go.”

Gain a Community Unlike Any Other

BJJ is known to help students gain confidence and self-defense skills, but you might make your new best friends, too. Learning, drilling, and pushing the mental and physical limits of your body in the company of like-minded teammates has a special way of encouraging community.

We balance good-natured fun with safe, serious learning, and our communities in St. Mary's and Calvert Counties thrive.

One of our dedicated female members, who has been training with Calvert MMA since Summer 2019, shared her experience about the supportive BJJ community:

"BJJ pushes me to my limits mentally and physically, makes me stronger and confident, and shows me what I'm capable of," she said. "Another huge benefit is this strong group of women who train here and are nothing but supportive of each other. We make each other better, and training ends up being that much more fun. There's nothing more beneficial to women than having that connection and support from other women."
