Evolution of the Lineage BJJ® Youth Belt Ranking System - A Commitment to Excellence

At Lineage BJJ®, we believe in fostering growth through discipline, respect, and dedication. Our Youth Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) program is designed to provide children with more than just practical self-defense skills. The program's multifaceted approach helps children improve their physical fitness, build self-confidence, discipline, and learn respect for others.

Our Journey from Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to IBJJF

Over time, we have evolved our youth belt ranking system to best serve our students and uphold our high standards. Starting with the original Gracie Jiu-Jitsu youth belt system, we moved to the Helio Gracie approved belt system in 2012, keeping the legacy alive.

However, recognizing the need for our students to participate fairly in competitions, we have transitioned to the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) recognized youth belt system. Under the previous belt system, IBJJF rules led our youth competitors to compete against students with more advanced ranks and experience. To ensure safety and fairness, we made this transition.

Our Belt Systems – A Closer Look

The Gracie Jiu-Jitsu youth belt system, initiated by co-founders Carlos and Helio Gracie, is a method of measuring student competency and moral character. With four colors (white, yellow, orange, and green), each rank included three stripes before promotion. The Helio Gracie youth system introduced by the Valente Brothers added six belts and a fourth stripe, aiming to reignite the motivation of our young practitioners.

Today, we follow the IBJJF youth belt system, initiated in 2012, which comprises 13 belts, with each belt receiving four stripes before promotion. After the white belt, each colored belt is divided into a low (white stripe) belt, solid color, and high belt (black stripe).

Promotion at Lineage BJJ® - Standards and Expectations

Our promotion standards for the youth belt system are built around minimum requirements but remain flexible to student progress and character development. Earning stripes or belts is not a given; they must be deserved and earned through hard work, dedication, and an understanding of the techniques.

Our youth belt promotion requirements include a minimum of 20 classes and two months for each promotion (stripe or belt), with four stripes awarded for each belt level. Misconduct can lead to the loss of stripes/rank at the instructors' discretion or parents' discretion at home/off the mats.

Moreover, students must pass basic testing for each solid belt color change. The belt tests' requirements differ for each belt, ranging from demonstrating various techniques to exhibiting proficiency in self-defense.

Promotion Is Not A Guarantee!!

We, at Lineage BJJ®, want to emphasize that the requirements listed for promotion are only the minimum. Promotions are not automatically granted upon fulfilling these requirements.

We are not a McDojo that sacrifices the quality of our program to maintain someone as a member. We are committed to providing a technically sound Gracie-Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instruction, preserving our high standards for our promotions.

When assessing promotions, our coaches consider various factors - technical skill, attitude, dedication, and the ability to help others. For lower ranks, the emphasis is placed on the application of techniques during rolling, while higher ranks require leadership qualities and the capacity to be a good training partner and teacher.

Should you feel you have reached the minimum requirements for promotion and have not been promoted, we encourage you to bring it to a coach's attention. Likewise, if you haven't quite reached the next level, don't worry! We're here to help you work towards your goals and improve your skills.

Certificates are awarded for each solid belt color promotion, and we take great pride in recognizing the dedication and hard work of our students.

The Road Ahead

Transitioning to the IBJJF system was a thoughtful decision aimed at aligning our students with a widely recognized standard, ensuring fair competition and setting them up for success both on and off the mats.

At Lineage BJJ®, we see Jiu-Jitsu not just as a martial art but as a way of life. We understand that the journey is different for everyone. The belt is an indicator of progress, but it’s the character, skills, and growth that matter most.

Our ultimate goal is to build not just good martial artists but great individuals who can contribute positively to society.

For parents and students, we encourage open communication. If you have any questions or need clarification on the promotion process, don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

As our curriculum evolves, testing requirements may change. This ensures that our program stays current and continues to challenge our students in new and innovative ways.
