Parents: What You Need to Know About Our Jiu-Jitsu Classes

At Lineage BJJ, we understand how important it is for parents to choose the right activity for their children. That’s why we’ve crafted programs that go far beyond just teaching Jiu-Jitsu techniques. Our classes provide a structured and engaging environment where kids not only learn the art of Jiu-Jitsu but also develop essential life skills like discipline, confidence, and resilience.

We believe in creating a safe and supportive space where children of all ages and abilities can thrive. Our experienced instructors work to ensure every student feels encouraged and empowered, no matter where they are in their journey. From the youngest "Mat Munchkins" just starting to follow directions to our advanced youth competition team, every class is designed to balance skill-building, character development, and, most importantly, fun.

Now, we get it—many parents envision their child being constantly active during the entire class. However, true learning and growth happen not just through movement but also through listening, observing, and practicing techniques with focus and precision. This balance of activity and attentiveness is a cornerstone of our approach, and it’s why our system has been so successful in helping kids grow both on and off the mats.

In this guide, we’ll break down what makes our classes unique, explain how each age group benefits, and address common questions, so you can feel confident about your child’s experience at Lineage BJJ.

Mat Munchkins (Ages 3-4)

Our Mat Munchkins program is an incredible opportunity for young children to begin their martial arts journey, and it’s one of the most popular programs we offer. This 30-minute class is specially designed for kids aged 3 to 4 who are still learning to navigate social interactions, follow directions, and develop physical coordination.

Due to the intentionally small class sizes—limited to just six to eight kids—spots in this program fill up quickly, and a waitlist is often inevitable. We keep the group small to ensure each child gets the personal attention they need to succeed in this critical developmental stage. If you’re considering enrolling your child, don’t wait—contact us today to check availability and secure your place on the list if necessary!

We also want to emphasize that if we determine your child isn’t quite ready yet, that’s completely okay. Every child develops at their own pace, and starting a new activity like Jiu-Jitsu can be overwhelming for some. It’s important to remember that this is a brand-new experience for your child. They’re being introduced to a social setting that requires listening, following directions, and practicing physical techniques—all of which might take time to adjust to.

Our goal is to set every child up for success, which means ensuring they feel comfortable and confident in class. If your child needs a little more time to grow socially or mentally, we may suggest waiting three to six months before trying again. This recommendation is not a reflection on your child or your parenting—it’s simply part of our commitment to providing a safe, positive learning environment for everyone.

We also know that many parents naturally want to see their children excel and may feel frustrated if their child struggles at first. It’s important to let go of the idea that your child’s performance reflects on you. Instead, think of this as an opportunity for growth. What we’re teaching is not just about Jiu-Jitsu techniques; it’s about helping children feel comfortable in a group setting, develop focus, and build the ability to follow instructions. These are essential life skills that take time to learn.

Above all, the safety of your child and others is our top priority. For a child to participate successfully, they must be able to focus, follow directions, and practice safely without posing a risk to themselves or their classmates. These foundational skills ensure your child—and every child in the class—has a fun, positive, and enriching experience.

So, if your child isn’t quite ready yet, don’t be discouraged. Every child’s journey is unique, and we’re here to support them whenever they’re ready to take their first steps onto the mat.

Little Sharks (Ages 5-7): What to Expect

The Little Sharks program at Lineage BJJ® is a 45-minute class designed specifically for kids aged 5 to 7. This class focuses on introducing children to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a way that is fun, engaging, and age-appropriate.

In each class, kids will:

  • Learn 1-2 New Techniques: These techniques focus on self-defense and grappling, taught in a simple and practical way.

  • Practice Skills in a Controlled Environment: Children will develop body awareness, coordination, and balance through drills and partner work.

  • Continue Developing Social and Listening Skills: The class includes activities that help kids improve focus, learn to take direction, and work with others.

Classes begin with warm-ups and interactive drills that are designed to prepare the kids for the techniques they’ll learn that day. While games are still a part of the structure, they are balanced with skill-building to keep the class focused and effective. The overall goal is to ensure kids are having fun while gaining confidence and learning valuable skills.

There is no prior experience necessary for Little Sharks—our rotating curriculum allows kids to start at any time. Whether it’s their first time on the mats or they’ve tried other activities before, each child can jump in and begin learning at their own pace.

This program also begins to introduce children to the idea of responsibility on the mats. They are taught to respect their training partners and practice techniques safely, which helps build discipline and awareness. Little Sharks is structured to ensure that every child leaves class feeling successful, whether they’re mastering a new move or simply learning how to work in a group.

At this age, we focus on making sure kids are comfortable with the structure of class, can follow instructions, and understand how to practice safely. If a child struggles with these elements, it’s perfectly okay—it’s all part of the learning process. Every child grows at their own pace, and we are here to help guide them when they’re ready.

The Little Sharks program is about more than Jiu-Jitsu; it’s about building a foundation for future success, both on and off the mats.

Junior Grapplers (Ages 8-13): Advancing Skills and Building Confidence

The Junior Grapplers program at Lineage BJJ® is designed for kids aged 8 to 13, offering a more in-depth and challenging approach to learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This class runs longer than our younger age programs and introduces advanced techniques and concepts in a way that matches the maturity and physical ability of this age group.

What to Expect in Class

In each session, students will:

  • Warm Up with Functional Exercises: These drills improve flexibility, strength, and coordination while preparing students for the technical work ahead.

  • Learn Self-Defense and Grappling Techniques: The curriculum focuses on practical skills that are applicable in real-world scenarios, as well as the core techniques of Jiu-Jitsu.

  • Participate in Live Rolling and Positional Drilling: Students get the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in controlled sparring sessions, which help them develop timing, problem-solving, and resilience.

A Step Forward in Training

This program builds upon earlier classes by introducing live rolling and positional drilling—key components of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training. These activities challenge students to use their skills in realistic situations, preparing them for both self-defense and competition. While the Junior Grapplers class includes fewer games than our younger programs, we ensure that the learning environment remains enjoyable and rewarding.

At this level, we place a stronger emphasis on discipline, focus, and consistent effort. Students leave each class not only with improved techniques but also with a sense of accomplishment and confidence in their abilities. Whether they are preparing for competitions or simply training for personal growth, the Junior Grapplers program offers the tools and support they need to succeed.

This program is ideal for kids who are ready to take their training to the next level in a structured yet supportive setting.

Youth Competition Team (By Invitation Only): Excellence in Training

The Youth Competition Team at Lineage BJJ® is where our most dedicated and talented students come together to refine their skills in a challenging and rewarding environment. Designed for intermediate and advanced students, this invitation-only class is held at our St. Mary’s location and focuses on high-level technical training, physical conditioning, and advanced grappling concepts.

Earning Your Spot

Joining the Youth Competition Team is a recognition of a student’s dedication, focus, and potential. Instructors nominate students based on their performance, effort, and readiness to handle the demands of the class. This isn’t a decision made lightly—it’s a consensus among our team to ensure that every participant is ready to thrive. While rare, if a student cannot keep up, we may recommend additional preparation before returning to this elite class.

What Happens in Class

Each session is structured like an adult program, emphasizing discipline, precision, and advanced application. Students will:

  • Warm up with exercises to build stamina and strength.

  • Learn advanced techniques and strategies.

  • Practice positional training and live rolling to test their skills in realistic scenarios.

While competition is a focus, it’s not a requirement. This class is about mastery and helping students push their limits, whether for tournaments or personal growth.

Extra Opportunities for Calvert Students

At our Calvert location, we provide additional preparation for competitions. The Monday and Wednesday Junior Grappling classes often take on a competition-style format, giving students focused training time. Additionally, we frequently offer a Friday session for kids, even though it’s not officially on the schedule. These extra opportunities help ensure all students, including those at Calvert, are fully prepared and supported.

A Program to Be Proud Of

For parents, having a child in this program is a point of pride. It reflects not just their technical ability but also their dedication and hard work. For students striving to join, it’s an achievable and exciting goal to work toward.

The Youth Competition Team is more than just preparation for tournaments; it’s a place where kids learn to challenge themselves, grow, and represent the best of Lineage BJJ®.

Why Do Kids Stand on the Wall?

We’ve heard some parents ask why their child spends time "on the wall" during class. Let’s address this once and for all: this is not wasted time. At Lineage BJJ®, every moment of our classes is intentional, whether your child is actively drilling a technique or observing from the edge of the mats. What we often call "on the wall" means standing back, watching, and learning while awaiting their turn—and this is one of the most effective ways to develop their skills, focus, and discipline.

The Purpose Behind "Wall Time"

  •  Focused Observation and Learning
Kids don’t just stand idly while on the wall. They are actively engaged, watching instructors demonstrate techniques and observing their peers practice. Research shows that learning through observation is a critical part of mastering physical and mental skills. By seeing others perform the movements, children develop a better understanding of what they’ll be doing when it’s their turn. This process helps them absorb techniques, mentally rehearse, and approach their own practice with more clarity.

  • One-on-One, High-Quality Instruction
When your child steps off the wall, they’re often working directly with a partner, an assistant coach, or even a Black Belt instructor. This level of personal attention ensures they receive detailed feedback tailored to their specific needs—something that isn’t possible in a large group setting. Unlike other martial arts classes that may focus on generic drills or exercise routines, Jiu-Jitsu prioritizes individualized learning. Every time your child is on the mats, they’re being guided with precision and care, which propels their progress far more effectively than generic group instruction.

  • Building Focus, Patience, and Discipline
Standing on the wall teaches essential life skills that will benefit your child beyond the mats. Patience, focus, and self-control are invaluable traits developed during this time. By learning to wait their turn, observe attentively, and respect others, kids grow into disciplined individuals who understand the value of staying engaged even when they’re not the center of attention.

  • Ensuring Safety for All Students
Jiu-Jitsu is a highly technical martial art that involves controlled movements targeting joints and body positions. Without proper supervision, these techniques could lead to injuries, especially in growing children. That’s why we never allow kids to drill unsupervised. When they’re "on the wall," they’re in the safest possible environment—watching and learning until it’s their turn to practice under the watchful eye of our instructors. This approach minimizes risk and ensures every child trains safely and correctly.

A Broader Perspective: Sports and Active Time

Think about other sports. In football, the average game includes only 7-12 minutes of actual playtime during a one-hour game. Similarly, in baseball, basketball, and soccer, kids spend much of their time observing from the sidelines or waiting their turn. These moments aren’t wasted—they’re when players absorb strategy, learn from watching others, and prepare for their own opportunity to contribute. The same is true in Jiu-Jitsu: "wall time" is learning time, and it’s just as important as the time spent actively drilling techniques.

Why This Approach Works

The structure of our classes at Lineage BJJ® is built around the most effective teaching methods. Rener Gracie, one of the most respected figures in Jiu-Jitsu, has emphasized that group classes like ours are the safest, most efficient, and most practical way to teach children. The combination of focused observation and individualized attention during practice accelerates learning far beyond what’s possible in other environments.

"Wall time" is not downtime—it’s an essential part of the process that helps your child learn, grow, and succeed.

Why Our Approach Works

At Lineage BJJ, our methods stand apart from other martial arts schools—and the results make it clear why. In 2024 alone, our students didn’t just show up to competitions; they dominated them. They consistently secured victories through submissions, demonstrating mastery of technique, timing, and strategy. These aren’t close calls or wins by points—they are definitive, skill-based achievements that highlight the effectiveness of our training approach.

This kind of success doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the product of a meticulously developed system that prioritizes three essential pillars: technical precision, safety, and discipline. Every aspect of our curriculum, from warm-ups to live rolling, is designed to help students excel in competition and in life.

But our approach goes beyond competition. In nearly two decades between Lineage BJJ and Calvert MMA, we’ve maintained an unmatched track record: none of our students involved in physical altercations have been injured or lost a fight. This isn’t about teaching aggression; it’s about providing students with the skills and confidence to defend themselves effectively and responsibly.

This real-world effectiveness sets us apart from other martial arts schools in Southern Maryland. We don’t just teach flashy moves or focus solely on fitness; we equip our students with practical self-defense skills that work when it truly matters. Whether on the mats, in competition, or out in the world, what we’re doing works. We’re preparing your child for challenges they may face in any setting, giving them the confidence and capability to rise above.

With our proven methods, your child isn’t just learning Jiu-Jitsu—they’re learning how to approach challenges with determination, discipline, and the tools to succeed. This is why our approach is so much more than a martial arts program; it’s a system that builds strong, capable, and resilient individuals.

A Thoughtful Teaching System

At Lineage BJJ, our teaching methodology isn’t just based on tradition; it’s rooted in science and refined through years of experience. We’ve worked closely with experts in child psychology, neuroscience, kinesiology, and education to create a system that is as effective as it is engaging. These insights have helped us craft an approach tailored to how children think, grow, and thrive.

One of our instructors, who holds a master’s degree in education and has experience teaching physical education to elementary school children, has been instrumental in shaping our program. This unique perspective ensures that our classes are not only physically beneficial but also developmentally appropriate. By understanding how kids learn best, we’ve created a curriculum that helps them progress in ways that feel natural and rewarding.

At the core of our teaching philosophy is the balance between structure and play. Research consistently shows that children—and even animals—retain information more effectively when they’re actively engaged and having fun. That’s why our classes incorporate enjoyable activities alongside skill-building exercises. Whether it’s through interactive games, focused drills, or hands-on instruction, we create an environment where kids are excited to learn and motivated to succeed.

This thoughtful system ensures that your child isn’t just learning techniques—they’re building confidence, discipline, and a love for learning. Every activity is designed to capture their attention, challenge their abilities, and help them grow into confident, capable individuals, both on and off the mats.

Added Value for Parents

At Lineage BJJ, we understand that your child’s growth and success mean the world to you, and we’re committed to helping you be a part of their journey. That’s why we’ve developed an online academy, giving you access to lessons and techniques your child is learning in class. This resource allows you to practice together at home, reinforcing their skills while creating meaningful moments of connection and support.

The online academy isn’t just a convenience—it’s a bridge between what happens on the mats and your role as a parent. By actively engaging in their progress, you’re not only helping them excel in Jiu-Jitsu but also fostering a deeper bond. Watching them improve, guiding their practice, and celebrating their milestones becomes a shared experience that strengthens your relationship. It’s just one more way we go above and beyond to provide the best possible experience for your family.

What Your Child Gains

Our classes are about far more than Jiu-Jitsu—they’re a foundation for personal growth and lifelong success. Here’s what your child will gain as they train with us:

  • Friendships: In every class, your child builds strong connections with their teammates in a supportive and inclusive environment. These bonds foster teamwork, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging.

  •  Listening Skills: Learning to take instruction from adults other than their parents helps children develop respect, focus, and the ability to adapt to new challenges—a critical skill for success in school and beyond.

  • Confidence: Overcoming challenges, mastering techniques, and celebrating small victories instills a belief in their abilities. This confidence grows with every class, preparing them to tackle obstacles in all areas of life.

These benefits go well beyond the mats. Whether it’s navigating the classroom, forming friendships, or facing life’s challenges, the qualities your child develops here will serve them for years to come. At Lineage BJJ, we’re not just teaching martial arts; we’re helping shape confident, disciplined, and respectful young individuals who are prepared to thrive in any environment.

Closing Thoughts

At Lineage BJJ, we know that choosing the right activity for your child is an important decision, and we’re honored to be part of their growth. Everything we do is designed to ensure your child learns, thrives, and builds skills that extend far beyond the mats. From their first tentative steps in a Mat Munchkins class to mastering advanced techniques in the Youth Competition Team, every moment is part of a thoughtful process that helps your child become the best version of themselves.

If you’ve ever questioned why your child might spend time observing during class or wondered about the methods we use, we hope this guide has made it clear: there is a purpose behind everything we do. Whether it’s teaching discipline through “wall time,” encouraging confidence through individualized instruction, or fostering resilience in a structured yet playful environment, our approach works. The results—on the mats and in life—speak for themselves.

If you’re new to Lineage BJJ, we invite you to take the first step. Schedule a visit to our academy, meet our instructors, and watch a class in action. Let us show you how our unique approach can help your child grow in confidence, discipline, and skill. We offer free trials to give your child a chance to experience the program firsthand, and with our rotating curriculum, they can start at any time—no waiting for a new session or the “perfect moment.”

For younger children, we understand that readiness varies. If your child isn’t quite ready to focus, listen, or practice safely, it’s okay. Every child develops at their own pace, and we’re here to support them when the time is right. We’ll provide guidance and encouragement to ensure their eventual success, whether it’s a few weeks or months down the road.

For parents whose children are already part of our program, we want you to know how much we value your trust. Seeing your child grow stronger, more confident, and more disciplined is the reason we do what we do. Whether they’re thriving in a Mat Munchkins class, excelling in Junior Grapplers, or achieving new heights in our Youth Competition Team, their progress is something to celebrate.

At Lineage BJJ, we’re not just teaching martial arts—we’re building confident, disciplined, and resilient young leaders who are prepared for anything life throws their way. We are proud to guide your child on this journey, and we’re excited to see all they’ll accomplish in the future.

Thank you for being part of the Lineage BJJ family. Let’s keep growing, learning, and thriving together.
